Blog

The Ranger Diaries blog has now shifted in a slightly different direction to previous years in the form of a shorter, more habitual and traditional diary entry. This format gives me the platform to share more nature stories in real time. Visit my diary - become inspired by nature and join me on a journey through the seasons.

Of course, you can still peruse all of my former, more extensive writings below by exploring the blog archive or simply by searching for the subject matter of your choice.

Intricate Relations

Nick Wilson-Smith October 13, 2024

"The variation in fungi types is incredibly vast but for this blog I will focus solely on the tree rotters, organisms that directly cause the wood tissues to decay and break down in variegated ways."

An Autumnal Cornucopia

Nick Wilson-Smith November 13, 2022

“My writing this month will swerve the stereotypical adjectives of this glorious season, and will instead hone in on the assemblage of phenomenal fungi that I have found, along with a couple of real periodic treasures of the fall - both of which were entirely unexpected encounters.”

Autumn Reflection

Nick Wilson-Smith November 16, 2021

“With many birds, the males tend to gain a significantly larger share of the attention, thanks to in most cases their more elaborate colouration. In this instance, it was the beauty of the females that struck me. Understated in comparison perhaps, but as striking and compelling a bird as I had seen in some time.”

Nick Wilson-Smith August 31, 2021

“Perhaps the reason why as a species, we are so attached to trees is that we are not so dissimilar ourselves.”

Wondrous Waxcaps

Nick Wilson-Smith November 27, 2020

“Many of us will instantaneously associate the autumn months with colour, and most of the time this is referring to the ever changing leaf shades as the green pigments of chlorophyll production begin to wane. Alternatively, this time of year also brings a somewhat rarer myriad of tints and tones, in the form of a very unique genus of fungi - Hygrocybe, also known as waxcaps.”

Bloggin' in the Tree World

Nick Wilson-Smith November 15, 2020

“The oak is a symbol, an icon and the true fabric of why I believe trees to be the most perfect example of life on earth. Trees like the oak aren’t just mere wood and leaf, they are an animation of existence entirely in their own right.”
