Blog

The Ranger Diaries blog has now shifted in a slightly different direction to previous years in the form of a shorter, more habitual and traditional diary entry. This format gives me the platform to share more nature stories in real time. Visit my diary - get inspired by nature and join me on a journey through the seasons.

Of course, you can still peruse all of my former, more extensive writings below by exploring the blog archive or simply by searching for the topic of your choice.

“As a child I could literally see its tree tops from my bedroom window. I hadn’t visited for a couple of years, but I had heard rumours that a remarkable little bird had returned to Jesmond Dene some time ago.”

The Myth of Midwinter - A Christmas Exposé

Nick Wilson-Smith December 30, 2020

“So, what if I was to tell you that a winter’s walk not only has the potential to reveal the folkloric customs of elves and witches, but may also present you with the unusual entities of frozen cat’s tongues and yellow brains?”

Winter Wanderings

Nick Wilson-Smith December 12, 2020

“After a short while, it slid clumsily down the rock face. Wondering if this would be the moment, we watched in anticipation. The pup quickly provided us with an answer by bounding straight over to the next rock pool, which was subsequently followed by more flapping and clapping. Clearly not quite ready to take the plunge just yet, but at least it was enjoying itself.”

Wondrous Waxcaps

Nick Wilson-Smith November 27, 2020

“Many of us will instantaneously associate the autumn months with colour, and most of the time this is referring to the ever changing leaf shades as the green pigments of chlorophyll production begin to wane. Alternatively, this time of year also brings a somewhat rarer myriad of tints and tones, in the form of a very unique genus of fungi - Hygrocybe, also known as waxcaps.”
